Big Platforms Are Fighting the EU Over AI Assistants. Your Family's Data Is in the Middle

It’s Monday morning. The phone sits on the counter next to a cooling cup of coffee, your eight-year-old wants to know who’s picking him up from school, and you ask your assistant out loud — because you heard that this autumn it would finally handle things like that. That’s not bad luck. It’s a pattern.

What’s happening between the big platforms and the EU

The EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) places an interoperability obligation on the largest platforms: capabilities a platform gives its own services — for example, its own AI assistant — must be available to competitors on equal terms. The platforms argue that for AI assistants this means granting external systems deep access to users’ devices — messages, files, photos — which they say endangers security. Regulators respond that nothing in the rules blocks new product launches; the point is simply that a platform owner can’t reserve key capabilities for itself.

The effect for people in the EU: AI features announced at global launch events reach Europe late, in reduced form — or, for now, not at all, with no date given. That’s exactly what just happened with the new generation of the assistant in one of the two largest mobile ecosystems (sources at the end of this article).

Both sides have serious arguments. Security researchers have indeed shown that AI agents can be hijacked and abused. But it’s also true that one company deciding which AI may act on hundreds of millions of devices is a market-concentration problem — and Europe has chosen to regulate it before it hardens.

The quieter story: a handful of players builds today’s AI

There’s a second observation, more important than any single dispute. Advanced AI models and compute are concentrated among a few companies. Even the largest device makers build their assistants in partnership with other giants and on someone else’s cloud infrastructure. That applies to the whole industry — including us: ParentOS’s AI features, including the Octo voice assistant, also rely on models from external providers.

Since almost nobody builds models single-handedly anymore, the question that really matters is different: what do the models get to see, and who holds the keys to everything else.

Notice what both sides of the dispute quietly assume

The fight between platforms and regulators is about who should be trusted with access to the data on your device. Both sides assume the same thing: that someone other than you holds your data, and only the guest list is being negotiated.

There’s a third approach. If data is end-to-end encrypted so that no provider can read it without your key, the question “who do we trust?” largely disappears. Here are the three models on the market today — we’re comparing architectures, not products:

How ParentOS protects data — specifics, no fine print

ParentOS, a family organization app designed to lighten the mental load of parenting, combines calendar, health, meals, tasks, education, finances, and the Octo voice assistant — built in Europe, for European families, available across the EU. We didn’t build it in reaction to regulatory disputes — but the architectural decisions we made early on go to their very heart:

End-to-end encryption for the most sensitive data. Health, finance, meal, and education data are encrypted with AES-256-GCM — an encryption standard widely used in the financial sector, among others — using a key derived on your device from a 24-word recovery phrase only you hold. ParentOS servers store this data exclusively as ciphertext, and we cannot read it (zero-knowledge model). The health and finance modules are additionally protected by two-factor authentication.

For full transparency: in the desktop and mobile apps, data pulled from external integrations (e.g., calendars) is also fetched and encrypted locally. In the browser version, integration data passes transiently through our server before being encrypted with your key — we say this explicitly, because security architecture should be described precisely, including its exceptions.

AI that only sees what you show it. ParentOS’s AI features — including Octo — use models from external providers. That’s exactly why we designed them so the model receives only the content of the current conversation or query you actively share — never access to your family’s encrypted archive.

Multi-platform from day one. In a real family, everyone is rarely in one ecosystem: one parent has one brand of phone, the other another, the kid a school laptop. ParentOS runs the same on phone, desktop, and the web — the shared picture of the day doesn’t end at an ecosystem boundary, and doesn’t depend on how negotiations between giants and regulators turn out.
